Cumbrian Young Enterprise Finals

Young Enterprise is an educational charity that has been teaching business and enterprise skills to young people since 1962, which has a long tradition at Netherhall School. The Plaque Shack is this year’s Netherhall School enterprise venture, as the name may suggest, it involved the manufacture of bespoke and personalised artisan wooden and slate plaques. Each plaque is hand-cut, hand-painted and finished to the highest standard.

The team comprised of fourteen Year 12 students, including: Managing Director, Finance Director, Company Secretary, Operations Manager, and many more. They raised their initial stake by selling over £300 worth of shares in the company and began trading with the public at the switch-on of the Maryport Christmas Lights. Further to this, at the Christmas Trade Fair at Dunmail Park, the Plaque Shack won the judge’s audit and joint first place of the four schools who attended.

The Plaque Shack began their preparations for the Spring Trade Fair in February and the West Cumbria Area Final at the Wave Centre, Maryport in March. For the company programme national competition, each team is marked at every stage, in the three categories: a 10-page formal company report, a grilling by various judges at their trade stands and a four minute presentation to invited guests. Netherhall School were runners-up, winning the award for product quality.

Netherhall School went on to represent West Cumbria in the County Final at the Crown and Mitre Hotel in Carlisle, where they met the winners and runners-up from North Cumbria and South Cumbria. The competition was wide open, with a huge range of innovative products on show. The Netherhall School team gave a seamless presentation, full of energy, enthusiasm and personality which generated huge affection and warmth from the assembled guests and other contestants.

Although the competition journey has ended for The Plaque Shack, the school is very proud of their achievements and they continue to trade, completing an order for a local country house wedding in July. In addition to this, there is always next Year!
